Take Your Jacket Off

Okay bloggers, this is the second posting in my week of silly posts. This one is a discussion post, so I hope you all join in with your opinions. From the title of this post you can guess where I am going with this. Today, it's all about those nifty, yet entirely irritating, book jackets!

Before I go into the discussion, let me answer yesterday's "Guess Me From Behind" post. Thank you to everyone who commented with guesses, and to those who Tweeted me your thoughts. They were really sweet and greatly appreciated!

I know some of you are dying to know the answer to #2. I cannot believe how hard this one was for everyone.

Take Your Jacket Off: Love or Hate vs. Like or Dislike

Oh the book jacket, or dust jacket, dust cover, dust wrapper, or just plain-ol’ jacket. No matter what you call it, the book jacket has the same purpose; always has and always will. It’s that papery, detachable, outer cover on hardback books. Usually, the jacket is adorned with pretty illustrations and full of text about the book and author. We all know them, we all like them, or do we? That today is my discussion. Do we really like book jackets? Really, can we honestly say we love that papery object?

I present my case. The defendant in question is usually fun to be around.
  • Exhibit A: Book jackets are usually very pretty. The illustrations, fonts, colors, what-not are eye catching… sometimes shiny. I love shiny!
  • Exhibit B: Book jackets are a warmer (duh, it is a jacket!), friendly book protector. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they also keep the book safe while on the shelf.
I present my case. [Now the prosecution is up to bat] the defendant in question is usually a pain in the butt to be around.
  • Exhibit A: Book jackets never stay on while being read. They slide up and down. They slide from side to side in a most irritating fashion.
  • Exhibit B: Book jackets rip and tear easily. Because the material is paper, it’s really hard to keep from damaging the jackets while the books are in use.
  • Exhibit C: Book jackets, because of Ex. A and B, are not practical to use while being read. They cause more disruption then they do a good time.
Now, Book jackets are in need of a jury… will you be that? Hear me out, I love book jackets. I love to LOOK at book jackets. BUT I do not love them while reading a book. I always take the jackets off, read the book, and then gently place the jacket back on.

On a scale of: [See below] what is your stance on book jackets?

Love----just like----just dislike----Hate

Place your verdict in the comments below!

  1. I don't like reading hardcover format, I prefer paperback, so I'm biased against the whole need for a dust jacket. My husband reads mostly hardcover, and always takes the dust jacket off to read.

  2. I take the jackets off while reading them and before I lend them out to some people, haha! :)

  3. Because of all the reasons you stated I prefer paperbacks but hardbacks look better on the shelf.

  4. Strangely, I never had any problems with book jackets sliding or tearing, I guess it depends on your reading style. Most of the time I read on my bed and only turn the pages, so the jackets are pretty much undisturbed. So, Yes, I'm all for book jackets. An they are so beautiful to look at.

  5. Ha! I always take my jackets off while reading too! But I think they make a book very pretty on the shelf! And, it's nice to have a layer between the book & the 'elements' so it's being damaged instead of my book! :)

  6. I love to have my books in hardcover format and love their covers but I just hate how uncomfortable they are while you read. Like you I end up getting the cover off while I read and then place it back on when it's time for it to hit my shelves.
